Split last name, first name
An Excel formula exercise from Formuladrill. Solve it with a formula bar on a live sheet in your browser, and it is checked the moment you submit.
The task
Each name is written as the last name, a comma, a space, then the first name. Put the last name in column B and the first name in column C for both rows. The names change, so find the comma rather than counting characters.
What this exercise teaches
FIND with LEFT and MID is the general way to split text on a separator, and it copes with last names that contain spaces. Wrapping the MID in TRIM would also cover names typed without the space.
A hint if you get stuck
FIND(",",A2) gives the comma position. LEFT takes everything before it; MID starts two characters after it, skipping the comma and the space.
