Count with a wildcard
An Excel formula exercise from Formuladrill. Solve it with a formula bar on a live sheet in your browser, and it is checked the moment you submit.
The task
Count the support tickets whose subject contains the word in E1 (anywhere in the text, any capitals) and whose status is the one in E2. Put the count in E3.
What this exercise teaches
The * wildcard stands for any run of characters and ? for a single one. COUNTIF, SUMIF and their IFS versions all accept wildcards, and they ignore capitals, which is why Refund and refund both count.
A hint if you get stuck
Wrap the word in asterisks: "*"&E1&"*" matches any text that contains it. COUNTIFS takes the status as the second condition.
