Rank with ties
An Excel formula exercise from Formuladrill. Solve it with a formula bar on a live sheet in your browser, and it is checked the moment you submit.
The task
Rank the reps by sales in C2:C6, where 1 is the highest. Reps with equal sales share the same rank, and the rank after a tie is skipped (two reps tied in 3rd means nobody is 4th). Do it with COUNTIF.
What this exercise teaches
COUNTIF(range,">"&B2)+1 does what RANK does and shows what a rank means: how many are ahead of you, plus one. Tied values get the same number because the same number of reps are ahead of each of them.
A hint if you get stuck
A rep's rank is one more than the number of reps with higher sales. COUNTIF with ">"&B2 counts them; lock the range with $.
