Level 3: Lookups Exercise 41 of 87 Pro

Who sold the most

An Excel formula exercise from Formuladrill. Solve it with a formula bar on a live sheet in your browser, and it is checked the moment you submit.

The task

Put the highest sales figure in E2 and the name of the rep who made it in E1. Both must update if the numbers change.

What this exercise teaches

Lookups usually go from a key to a value; MATCH on the number lets you go from a value back to its label. With two reps tied at the top, MATCH returns the first one.

A hint if you get stuck

MATCH(MAX(B2:B7),B2:B7,0) finds the row that holds the maximum; INDEX returns the name from that row of A2:A7.

Functions used: INDEX, MATCH, MAX
