A column number that moves
An Excel formula exercise from Formuladrill. Solve it with a formula bar on a live sheet in your browser, and it is checked the moment you submit.
The task
Return the units for the product in H1 and the quarter in H2, in H3. Use MATCH against the header row A1:E1 to find the column number instead of typing it.
What this exercise teaches
A typed column number breaks when columns are inserted or when the report asks for a different quarter. MATCH against the header row keeps the column index in step with the labels.
A hint if you get stuck
MATCH(H2,A1:E1,0) returns 4 for Q3, which is exactly the column number VLOOKUP needs in its third argument. INDEX with two MATCHes works as well.
